Difference of eyes among races

Anthropologists call Asians as 'Mongoloids’. According to the results of various analyses on a gene, Koreans are classified as part of the northern race and the southern race. Except for the southeast Asian and Chinese race, people of Korea, Manchuria, and north of part of the Great Wall of China are named as ‘a northern mongoloid’ and has characteristics such as small eyes without a double eyelid, Mongolian folds, a flat face with prominent cheekbones, and a Mongolian spot on the buttocks. On the other hand, the Western race adapt to relatively warm climates in areas such as Polynesia, and Hawaii in the Pacific ocean, People from the Oceanic regions and southern Asia have double eyelids, slight Mongolian folds, and bigger eyes than the people of the northern regions. They are called the 'southern mongoloids’. It is said that among Koreans, 70~80% of the people are north and 20~30% are the south.

 

What is a single eyelid of a Mongolian race?

We call the eye without a double eyelid as a single eyelid. An eyeline where the eyelashes grow is fully covered with the skin above the eye. As a result, the eye seems small and swollen over the region of the line. On the other hand, an eye with double eyelid appears to be more attractive and refined because they look brighter, bigger, and well-matched with your eyelashes. This process is done by removing, pulling, or folding the excess skin to further expose the rest of your pupil and give your eyes a brighter, more natural look.

Reasons why Mongolians have a single eyelid

 

1.Racial reasons

 

About 70~80% of Koreans are originated from the northern Mongolian race so they have single eyelids. The remaining 20~30% are from southern Mongolia and other mixed races. It is statistically shown that 70-80% of Koreans have no double eyelids. Northern Mongolian races having no double eyelids among the other various races provide a definite differentiation between people with double eyelids and those with Mongolian folds.

2.Anatomical reasons

 

An eyelid is anatomically composed of various different tissues (skin, muscle, fat, tarsal plates, conjunctiva (waterline) and so on). The tissues that help the opening of the eyes, called the levator muscle, is attached to the upper tarsal margin, and some parts of the muscle tissues are also attached to the back side of the eyelid skin. Based on this mechanism, a double eyelid is made simultaneously by the pulling up of the skin when the eyes open.

 

Cause 1

 

In eyes with a double eyelid, parts of levator muscle are attached to the back of the skin. On the other hand, an eye without a double eyelid has a structure called an orbicularis oculi muscle which is thicker. Also, the fat tissue is drooped down and blocks the formation of the double eyelid.

 

Cause 2

 

The Mongolian folds(epicanthus) add volume to the corner region, forming thick a fibrous band. This vertically acting tension band forms an adverse effect against a horizontal double eyelid crease. The Mongolian fold(epicanthus) delivers the power to the levator muscle toward the opposite direction when the eyes open, and it acts as a major disturbance of a double eyelid formation and often disrupts the ideal conditions for surgical completion.

Although a double eyelid surgery has been the most popular and well-known procedures ever, the importance of the Mongolian folds or epicanthoplasty have been failed to be noticed because of the limitations of existing or conventional surgeries. Recently, the Magic epicanthoplasty proves its effectiveness on Mongolian folds. These two combined procedures (double eyelid surgery combined with Magic epicanthoplasty) become the new paradigm of the eyelid surgery.

 

 

 

The appearance of eyelid skin in a single eyelid

 

In most cases, eyes with a single eyelid make an eye seem so small in both of width and length, They look closed and heavy. Therefore, the refined image is hardly made and they always cause the eyes to look swollen and small as if the person is unintentionally glaring.

The eyelashes are the true boundaries of the eyeline between the eyelid and the cornea of the eye (the black region of the eye.) The eyeline of a Caucasian is exposed almost completely and it is appeared to look clear and pure due to sufficient exposure of the cornea. Also, the eyes look bigger because of the higher location of the line of the eyelid. In contrast, eyes of a Korean with only a single eyelid are covered with sufficient amount of skin drooping down from above. Therefore, the eyeline where the lahes grow is hidden within the skin instead of showing the real eyeline. As a result, the more the eyelid skin droops down, the smaller and the puffier the eyes look. It also results in widened and exaggerated intercanthal distance due to existing Mongolian folds.
